Gallery | Maite Benito Agahnia

The process of painting, more than the painting itself, is what moves me the most and what inspires me to create.

The constant changes that I make to the canvas, the different stages, the endless interactions of the elements, that continuous evolution, which at one moment finally settles to a point of balance.

To me,  a painting is more than a painting; it is a series of events."

Born in Mexico City, Maite grew up in a family where art was a focus in learning and travel, regularly visiting museums and galleries. She was always encouraged to think creatively and develop artistically.
She moved to southern California, where she acquired a Bachelor of Arts degree from San Diego State University. She became a  graphic designer and ran her own design firm for over 20 years while simultaneously pursuing her passion with painting. She found that the freedom of abstract painting and the constraints of design encouraged her to explore the relationship between the two, using them to complement each other and experiment with design elements in her abstract work.
Maite’s inspiration comes from everyday objects in her immediate environment; color, textures and shapes and how these interact with each other. Contemporary artists including Anselm Kiefer, Robert Rauschenberg, Viera da Silva, and Richard Diebenkorn have been influential in her work.
Maite’s work is abstract, exploring color, shapes and lines with rich textures creating movement and balance.
