Maite Benito Agahnia
02/16/2010The process of painting, more than the painting itself, is what moves me the most and what inspires me to create. The constant changes that I make to the canvas, the different stages, the endless interactions of the elements, that continuous evolution, which at one moment finally settles to a point of balance. To me, a painting is more than a painting; it is a series of events." Born in Mexico City, Maite grew up in a family where art was a focus in learning and travel, regularly visiting museums and galleries. She was always encouraged to think creatively and develop artistically.
She moved to southern California, where she acquired a Bachelor of Arts degree from San Diego State University. She became a graphic designer and ran her own design firm for over 20 years while simultaneously pursuing her passion with painting. She found that the freedom of abstract painting and the constraints of design encouraged her to explore the relationship between the two, using them to complement each other and experiment with design elements in her abstract work.
Maite’s inspiration comes from everyday objects in her immediate environment; color, textures and shapes and how these interact with each other. Contemporary artists including Anselm Kiefer, Robert Rauschenberg, Viera da Silva, and Richard Diebenkorn have been influential in her work.
Maite’s work is abstract, exploring color, shapes and lines with rich textures creating movement and balance.

Sharon Barfoot (Zappha)
12/01/2009My artistic expression is primarily abstract in bold colours with rich textural surfaces. The tactile aspect of working with papers such as Japanese paper and Yupo add an element of surprise. A spontaneous dialogue between the material and myself emerges through layering, reworking and distressing the surface. This process of layering is an intuitive approach in which the integrity of each layer affects the final image. These paintings are a combination of preconceived shapes and symbols and abstract gestures and marks.
The natural environment in the Grey-Bruce region influences my work and the Niagara Escarpment is a place I gravitate to when I need to feel spiritually connected to the land. Whenever I take time to walk along the rugged coastline of the Bruce Peninsula (which is part of the Niagara Escarpment), or hike along the Bruce Trail, I’m excited by the natural dynamics. The textures, the blended earth colours, the intensity of the blue water of Georgian Bay, the organic rock shapes and deep crevices, along with the isolation of the Bruce Peninsula and the feeling of timelessness, give me creative energy and the desire to paint.
There are many other influences affecting my artwork that evoke a “subtle blend of the conceptual and the sensual” and a sense of journey. In addition to exploring the natural environment and reading about subjects that interest me, I have travelled to many places in the world and each culture and history inspires me and informs my Mixed Media paintings and prints, both directly and indirectly. Perhaps my work could be summarized as “meditations on the convergence of land, time, and memory.”

11/23/2009While on a short term path of simplification, I have embarked on the current set of ink washes and drawings on paper. This endeavor allows a more concentrated study of line and value. At the same time I am also exploring a more unorthodox approach to the application of media to substrate. The use of less controlled techniques in application include the use of sticks, fingers, rags, and pretty much anything not usually associated with the placement of ink on paper. These studies follow varying paths that culminate in a variety of series pieces. All strive to use an almost accidental application of line, form, and structure to create an image.
